Spend a Day in Lima
Travelers often neglect visiting Lima in order to maximize their time in more famous and beautiful locations such as Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Although Lima is not the most stunning city, it is full of life and probably the best place to observe and learn about Peruvian customs and way of life. Why not stay for a couple of days in this buzzing city and soak up the vibrant atmosphere as you get lost in the crowds, tame the combis and try some of the myriad Chifa restaurants. Here are some ideas to fill a day or two with cool activities in Lima.
Wake up early to enjoy Lima’s seafront at its best, in the morning, when it is relatively deserted. This is the perfect time to walk the Malecon, along the seaside, and stroll in the various park sprinkled along the coast. Make sure to check out Parque del Amor, with its gigantic statue of two lovers embracing and its inscribed walls.
As most tourists, and rightly so, you will probably stay in a hotel in Miraflores, Lima’s central and most modern district, where you will find shops, restaurants and other attractions at your fingertips. But if you like striding along the streets of a city until you make it your own, you will have to get away from Miraflores and explore the rest of Lima. And to make it even more interesting, why not bike around? Stop at the bike and stroller market off of Plaza Grau in downtown Lima. Here you will find hundreds of bikes of all types from s./100 ($35). Nearby isPolvos Azules, a huge clothes and shoes market worth checking out.
Now you just have to learn how to get around traffic. Start finding your bearings in San Isidro, Lima’s upscale district, where roads are well kept and traffic is less hectic. Here you can also indulge in a nice shopping spree, as the district is filled with excellent shops. Stop for coffee and a pastry at San Antonio’s on Avenida Angamos Oeste.
As dusk arrives, go watch the Magic Circuit of Water in Parque de la Reserva. This huge complex of fountains, the largest in South America, features 13 fountains lighting with hundreds of colors at night (7:15pm, 8:15pm and 9:30pm). If you want to avoid the crowds, prefer going on a weekday and late at night. Entrance is s./4 and the park stays open until 11pm.
For dinner, head out to Huaca Pucllana, Lima’s most interesting archeological site, located right in the middle of the Miraflores district. The site features an excellent restaurant boasting a varied menu and exquisite traditional Peruvian dishes, which you can enjoy while overlooking the ruins displayed right in front of you.
